RK&O is dedicated to enhancing our communities through public service and advocacy for those in need. Our lawyers and professional staff are actively involved in a diverse mix of civic, cultural, educational and other non-profit organizations. The firm's contributions include a broad combination of pro bono legal services, volunteer efforts and financial assistance. RK&O is proud to support dynamic organizations such as:
The Children's Law Center (Washington, D.C.) - CLC works to give every child in the District of Columbia a solid foundation of family, health and education. The organization provides free legal services to at-risk children and their families, and focuses on children who face instability as a result of abuse, neglect or extreme parental conflict, as well as children with special education or health needs. RK&O attorneys represent children and caregivers on a pro bono basis, through the Children’s Law Center pro bono legal advocacy program. RK&O also has a tradition of making children’s holidays brighter by “adopting” families and purchasing toys and gifts as part of the CLC Holiday Hope Drive.
Gideon's Promise (New York & Washington, D.C.) - Gideon’s Promise works to inspire, mobilize and train legal professionals to provide the highest quality criminal defense representations to ensure that the most vulnerable individuals have the same access to criminal justice as everyone else. The organization is also working to build a community of committed and passionate advocates to drive indigent defense reform. RK&O has provided financial support for Gideon's Promise and has hosted events highlighting the group's mission and work.
Jazz Foundation of America (New York) - For more than 21 years, the Jazz Foundation of America has been the only national organization dedicated to saving the homes and lives of elder jazz and blues musicians in crisis. In order to support this important mission of JFA, one of the firm's founding partners serves on the board of the organization, and the firm has participated in several fundraising efforts.
New York Cares (New York) - New York Cares Day is an annual effort to revitalize and improve New York City's public schools through volunteer service. RK&O sponsors a team of attorneys, staff and family members who create murals, paint classrooms, plant school gardens and engage students through NYC's largest hands-on volunteer program. Additionally, RK&O contributes to the New York Cares Winter Coat Drive and participates in the Winter Wishes program that provides holiday gifts for more than 35,000 children and families each year.
The Posse Foundation (New York & Washington, D.C.) - Posse is a college access and youth leadership development program that identifies, recruits and selects student leaders from public high schools and sends them (in groups called Posses) to some of the top colleges and universities in the country. Each Posse is a multicultural team that acts as a support system to ensure that each Posse Scholar succeeds and graduates from college. RK&O lawyers and staff help with candidate assessment during the initial screening process each fall and volunteer as writing coaches to prepare the students for college. The firm also provides meeting space and financial support.
Right To Play (London & New York) - Right to Play’s mission is to improve the lives of children in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world by using the power of sport and play for development, health and peace. Our lawyers and staff regularly raise funds for this great organization through community races and other sports activities. One of our founding partners also sits on the Right to Play USA Board of Directors.
Whitman-Walker Health (Washington, D.C.) - The WWH Legal Services Program offers free legal assistance to individuals on legal matters that are important to the LGBT community. RK&O attorneys and staff actively support the Legal Services Program through pro bono advocacy focused on immigration issues, and the relief afforded victims under the Violence Against Women Act. RK&O attorneys and staff also fundraise and walk together as a team in the annual Aids Walk Washington, Whitman-Walker Health’s premier fundraising event.
