Maria Lapetina is a member of RK&O’s Litigation Department. She represents and advises institutional and individual clients in complex commercial civil litigations, regulatory and white collar proceedings, and internal investigations. She has represented clients in investigations conducted by the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York, and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, among other government agencies, relating to insider trading, wire fraud, and financial disclosures. more +

Ms. Lapetina serves on the firm's Diversity Committee. She earned a J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law, where she served as a Comments Editor on the North Carolina Law Review. She earned a B.A. from Williams College. Prior to joining RK&O, Ms. Lapetina was an associate at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. Ms. Lapetina is a member of the Federal Bar Council.


  • Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in cross-border litigation involving the enforcement of loan guarantees. Obtained a $169 million judgment for the client.
  • A South American sports marketing firm in relation to the 2015 Brooklyn federal (EDNY) prosecution and investigation of FIFA officials and others.
  • Head equities trader of a multinational investment bank in connection with investigation by foreign regulator that the bank’s trading had violated local securities laws as well as the follow-on U.S. investigations by FINRA and the SEC.
  • The chief executive officer of a U.S. broker-dealer charged in Manhattan federal court with FCPA violations arising from fixed income trading for a Venezuelan bank.
  • The Independent Examiner for a Swiss bank in connection with the DOJ’s amnesty program for Swiss banks.
  • A Fortune 500 company in an internal investigation concerning errors in accounting disclosures.
  • Executives in DOJ and SEC proceedings relating to allegations of insider trading.
  • An airplane manufacturer in defense of multi-billion dollar litigation brought by World Trade Center leaseholder claiming damages arising out of 9/11 attacks.
  • An audit committee in an internal investigation of potential disclosure violations.
  • A New Zealand charitable trust in a dispute over the control of assets that includes litigation in New York, New Zealand and Venezuela.

Honors & Awards

Ms. Lapetina received an award for outstanding pro bono service from the Legal Aid Society in 2011, 2012 and 2013 for litigating a challenge to prison policies and procedures related to sexual abuse of prison inmates by prison staff.
