RK&O is dedicated to enhancing our communities through public service and advocacy for those in need. Our lawyers and professional staff are actively involved in a diverse mix of civic, cultural, educational and other non-profit organizations. The firm's contributions include a broad combination of pro bono legal services, volunteer efforts and financial assistance. RK&O is proud to support dynamic organizations such as:
The Children's Law Center (Washington, D.C.) - CLC works to give every child in the District of Columbia a solid foundation of family, health and education. The organization provides free legal services to at-risk children and their families, and focuses on children who face instability as a result of abuse, neglect or extreme parental conflict, as well as children with special education or health needs. RK&O attorneys represent children and caregivers on a pro bono basis, through the Children’s Law Center pro bono legal advocacy program. RK&O also has a tradition of making children’s holidays brighter by “adopting” families and purchasing toys and gifts as part of the CLC Holiday Hope Drive.
City Harvest (New York) - City Harvest helped start the food rescue movement in 1982 when a group of New Yorkers saw that New York City had an abundance of excess food, even as a large number of residents struggled to feed themselves and their families. RK&O attorneys and staff have volunteered at the Staten Island market where we helped to pack and distribute nearly 20,000 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables to eligible market-goers.
Hetrick-Martin Institute (New York) - Hetrick-Martin creates a healthy environment through emergency, health, education and career services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth between the ages of 13 and 24. RK&O has provided funding for a new computer lab at HMI and is helping with job readiness programming, such as resume writing and mock interview skills workshops for those seeking employment.
Jazz Foundation of America (New York) - For more than 21 years, the Jazz Foundation of America has been the only national organization dedicated to saving the homes and lives of elder jazz and blues musicians in crisis. In order to support this important mission of JFA, one of the firm's founding partners serves on the board of the organization, and the firm has participated in several fundraising efforts.
Legal Outreach (New York) - Using the law to transform the lives of urban youth from under-served communities, Legal Outreach provides educational programs that foster vision, develop skills, enhance confidence and facilitate the pursuit of higher education. For many years, RK&O has participated in the Legal Outreach Summer Internship Program, which places rising tenth graders in law firms and legal departments for the purpose of exposing them to legal professionals and various areas within the law.
New York Cares (New York) - New York Cares Day is an annual effort to revitalize and improve New York City's public schools through volunteer service. RK&O sponsors a team of attorneys, staff and family members who create murals, paint classrooms, plant school gardens and engage students through NYC's largest hands-on volunteer program. Additionally, RK&O contributes to the New York Cares Winter Coat Drive and participates in the Winter Wishes program that provides holiday gifts for more than 35,000 children and families each year.
Operation Backpack (New York) - Operation Backpack is New York City’s largest back to school drive, and has provided over 160,000 fully stocked backpacks to students living in homeless and domestic violence shelters. For more than eight years, RK&O has supported the annual Operation Backpack campaign through supply donations and financial contributions. RK&O attorneys and staff have also volunteered on-site to help assemble and distribute backpacks before the school year begins.
The Posse Foundation (New York) - Posse is a college access and youth leadership development program that identifies, recruits and selects student leaders from public high schools and sends them (in groups called Posses) to some of the top colleges and universities in the country. Each Posse is a multicultural team that acts as a support system to ensure that each Posse Scholar succeeds and graduates from college. RK&O lawyers and staff volunteer as mentors as students prepare for college and the firm also provides meeting space and financial support.
Whitman-Walker Health (Washington, D.C.) - The WWH Legal Services Program offers free legal assistance to individuals on legal matters that are important to the LGBT community. RK&O attorneys and staff actively support the Legal Services Program through pro bono advocacy focused on immigration issues, and the relief afforded victims under the Violence Against Women Act. RK&O attorneys and staff also fundraise and walk together as a team in the annual Aids Walk Washington, Whitman-Walker Health’s premier fundraising event.
